How Often Should You Clean a Stainless Steel Water Bottle?

Have you ever wondered how often you should clean your stainless steel water bottle?

Compared to all the other stuff in your kitchen, your water bottle is probably the item that gets cleaned the least often.

As you probably guessed, this is a bad habit that you can’t afford to overlook. Even though most people fill their bottles with just water, stainless steel bottles can still carry bacteria, such as cocci, bacillus, and rods. These bacteria can cause diarrhea, so washing your stainless steel bottle is crucial.

So how often should you wash? The answer is daily!

That’s the recommendation of health experts such as Janilyn Hutchings, a certified food safety professional, and Dr. Brian Chow, an infectious disease physician.

An easy way to incorporate this into practice is to start by washing your bottles as soon as you get back home from the great outdoors, the gym, or office.

How to Keep a Stainless Steel Water Bottle Clean

Wash your bottle with soap and warm water

Simply fill up your bottle about halfway with warm water. Then, add dish soap, close the lid, and gently shake it for around a minute. Doing this will help wash the bottle entirely, reaching corners and other hard-to-reach areas.

After you’re done shaking, remove the lid and wash it with extra care. Use a brush or sponge and make sure not to leave any crevices unclean, as these can harbor the most bacteria.

Finally, leave the bottle upside down to dry overnight. If you want to be extra safe, you can put it in the fridge to avoid bacterial growth.

Sanitize your stainless steel water bottle

Along with washing your bottle daily with soap, you should also consider sanitizing it weekly.

Sanitation is a method to guarantee your bottle’s further cleanliness and one that kills any resistant bacteria that might be lurking after some soap treatment.

To sanitize your stainless steel water bottle, simply mix baking soda with water at a 50/50 ratio. Pour the mix into the bottle and leave it for 10 minutes.

Done! Then all you have to do is rinse the bottle with water. Sanitation not only kills bacteria but also eliminates any odors if your bottle has started getting a little funky after pouring in some juice or sugar-loaded coffee.

Are Stainless Steel Water Bottles Dishwasher Safe?

Not exactly. While you can wash stainless steel water bottles at low heat, powder-coated stainless steel water bottles, such as Tru Flask, can lose their coating over time if continuously washed in the dishwasher.

That said, even if your bottle isn’t powder-coated, washing it in the dishwasher isn’t the best option. Why? Dirty water from other dishes, cutlery, and pans will often get trapped into the bottle. Essentially, creating a cavern inside your dishwasher for murky, bacterial water. Not pleasant, wouldn’t you agree?
